Soup Can illumination

aside from a few minor changes, Campbell’s tomato soup label looks quite much as it did when the flavour was introduced in 1897. As the story goes, the famous packaging came about since the company’s treasurer admired the red as well as white uniforms used by Cornell University’s football team. since then, that humble bit can has been an inspiring force of its own, most famously as Andy Warhol’s muse.

More recently, the label stimulated German illumination designer Christoph Matthias’ Canned Light. created by Ingo Maurer since 2003, its modern-pop cheekiness assisted win Belgium café/bookstore cook & Book accolades from commerce style Brussels for its ingenious interiors by Delacroix & Friant and Antiques & Design.

The perfect lively hit in a kitchen, the lights — as well as the label — prove the old adage: that great style is timeless, as well as that with a bit innovative thinking, the regular can be made extraordinary. Be it a soup can, spools of thread, a pickle jar …
